Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
